I had a great 2017. It was so good in fact that I have been having some serious struggles setting my 2018 goals. I even wrote a HUGE post about 2017 that is still sitting in my drafts. I decided not to post it, so here is the Coles Notes version:
- We had an amazing family vacay to Costa Rica where #TeamT explored rain forests, ate at some crazy “establishments”, saw a full on drug deal happen right in front of us, boogie boarded, body surfed, saw crazy wildlife and had an overall life changing experience.
- I ran my first Marathon, the Chicago Marathon in October and it was AWESOME!!!!! I loved every moment of it and the second I crossed that finish line I wanted to do another. Now, listen… me saying that is pretty crazy considering a few things. Here is where you skip the next paragraph if you prefer not to read some lady issues…
Okay, so…I got my period some time during the marathon. At 19km I went to the potty because of a familiar “back and abdominal ache” but..nothing. So, I peed and got moving. That’s how I know it started sometime after that.
Did you know that it is possible to BRUISE YOUR BLADDER????? Haha, neither did I. But that’s what happened. I emptied my bladder at 19k and the temperatures were so hot that the 2 cups of water every mile that I drank just sweat out of me and the walls of my bladder hit each other for 20+ kilometers. After a desperate text to Heather Gardner and some quick googling we found one article on the entire internet about it. So… Ladies…its a thing! Leave some pee in your bladder when you are running that long cause a bruised bladder sucks.
Despite all of that I had THE best time. It was the most amazing, and empowering, and proud moment of my life. I never thought that I would be able to do something like that, but I did it. I guess that is why I felt kinda sad on New Years Eve and on January 1st. I loved 2017 and I was sad to see it go.
Now it’s 2018 and I have no resolution, no big goal race yet, and only one race planned so far. I think part of it is because I didn’t get into the Chicago Marathon for 2018, and the NYC marathon lottery is sooooooo hard. The other part is because the marathon was always this elusive dream for me. It was something that I felt was just out of reach and now I just don’t know where to go from here. So, I bought a planner, I have some races penciled in and I am starting to put a more concrete off season plan together. It has been hard to say goodbye to 2017, but it is time to jump in to 2018 and get things started.
